Bird Watching Weekend

The weekend of the 24th - 25th of January 2015 saw the RSPB  Big Garden Birdwatch weekend.
For one hour thousands of people sat watching thier gardens to discover the wildlife that visit our gardens.
This is a great way if getting the whole family together.
With bird feeders full all we did was sit and wait.
Nana had a great time with this activity. We sent of for a pack a few weeks before.
In previous times I have made bird cakes and suet fat balls for the little critters.
To make a speedy birdcake it's quite simple all you need is a good quality of bird seed, raisins, grated cheese, suet or lard, yogurt pots, string, mixing bowls and a pair of scissors.
Carefully make a small hole in the bottom of a yogurt pot. Thread string through the hole and tie in a knot on the inside. Leave enough string so that you can tie the pot to a tree or your bird table.
Allow the lard to warm up to room temperatures, but don't melt it. Then cut it up into small pieces and put it in the mixing bowl.
Add the other ingredients to the bowl and mix them together with your finger tips.
Keep adding the seed / raisin  / cheese mixture and squidgy it until the fat holds it together.
Fill your yogurt pots with bird cake mixture and put them in the fridge to set for an hour or so.
Hang your speedy bird cakes from trees or your bird table.
It's a messy job which kids will love.
Great project for the kids at the weekend.
There are other recipes on the RSPB Web site at.    rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

There are many little birds that visit our homes. It's a pleasure to watch them.
We saw many a creature visit our window whilst watching including our own chickens who were wondering what the devil was going on.
We saw a range of birds including blackbirds, wood pigeons, sparrows, a robin,  blue tit, a starling, pheasant  and a buzzard. Not bad going, what a present hour we spent.

Oh What A Frosty Morning

I just love to wake up in the morning in winter to find Jack Frost has visited us the night before. I would much rather have a cold frosty ice morning than a damp, rainy, windy day.
There is something quite mystical about an icy morning followed by a sunny day, its lovely to be able to look around you and see, an icy puddle, a cob web frosted upon the fence, how its etched with a glittery white glow. In the distance you can see smoking chimneys, as the fire burns below the puffs of smoke rise up to the clouds in the sky.
How you can watch your breath steam out before you as breath, the hot and cold air meet in the middle and you look as if you are smoking.
Each morning as the sun rises you are bless with the most beautiful vision before you. The skies can be filled with such beautiful colours, the pinks are my favourite.
As the days go by the winter season will soon be gone, then you have the delights of spring. Live each day as it comes and treasure the life you have and most of all enjoy the beauty around you as its does not cost a penny when the delights of nature make you smile.
